It was first described by Wernicke in 1881 and is now known to be due to thiamine deficiency, usually from chronic alcohol abuse. It is almost invariably accompanied by or followed by Korsakoff's syndrome (organic amnesia) and frequently accompanied by other nutritional polyneuropathies.
