a procedure in which an electromagnetic coil is used to briefly stimulate specific areas of the brain. The procedure is done while the subject is awake, and no anesthesia is needed. TMS is being studied as a potential treatment for depression and other psychiatric disorders, and as an investigative tool to study normal and abnormal brain functioning.
