|---|---|---|---|

||

| thyrotoxicosis | <disease, endocrinology> The condition resulting from presentation to the tissues of excessive quantities of the thyroid hormones, whether the excess results from overproduction by the thyroid gland (as in Graves disease), originated outside the thyroid or is due to loss of storage function and leakage from the gland. (18 Nov 1997) |

| cold thyroid nodule | <radiology> Adenoma (75%), colloid cyst (10%), carcinoma (15%), mnemonic: CATCH PALLM colloid cyst, adenoma, thyroiditis, carcinoma, haematoma, parathyroid adenoma, abscess, lymph node, lymphoma, metastasis thyroid carcinoma, hot thyroid nodule (12 Dec 1998) |
| hot thyroid nodule | <radiology> Almost always hyperfunctioning adenoma, vast majority benign, up to 50% are autonomous see also: thyroid carcinoma, cold thyroid nodule (12 Dec 1998) |
| discordant thyroid nodule | <radiology> Hot on Tc-99m pertechnetate, cold on I-123 or I-131, indicates trapping, but no organification, same work-up as cold nodule (12 Dec 1998) |
| thyroid nodule | A small circumscribed mass of differentiated tissue associated with the thyroid gland. It can be pathogenic or non-pathogenic. The growth of nodules can lead to a condition of goiter, nodular. most nodules appear between the ages of 30 and 50 years and most are benign. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Arantius' nodule | A nodule at the centre of the free border of each semilunar valve at the beginning of the pulmonary artery and aorta. Synonym: nodulus valvulae semilunaris, Arantius' nodule, Bianchi's nodule, corpus arantii, Morgagni's nodule. (05 Mar 2000) |

| recombination nodule | <molecular biology> Protein containing assemblies of about 90 nm diameter placed at intervals in the synaptonemal complexes that develop between homologous chromosomes at the zygotene stage of meiosis. Some nodules may be associated with the site of recombination. (18 Nov 1997) |
| rheumatic nodule | A small round or oval, mostly subcutaneous nodule made up chiefly of a mass of aschoff bodies and seen in cases of rheumatic fever. It is differentiated from the rheumatoid nodule which appears in rheumatoid arthritis, most frequently over bony prominences. (12 Dec 1998) |
| rheumatoid nodule | Subcutaneous nodules seen in 20-30% of rheumatoid arthritis patients. They may arise anywhere on the body, but are most frequently found over the bony prominences. The nodules are characterised histologically by dense areas of fibrinoid necrosis with basophilic streaks and granules, surrounded by a palisade of cells, mainly fibroblasts and histiocytes. (12 Dec 1998) |
| root nodule | <plant biology> Globular structure formed on the roots of certain plants, notably legumes and alder, by symbiotic association between the plant and a nitrogen fixing microorganism (Rhizobium in the case of legumes and Frankia in the case of alder and a variety of other plants). | Morgagni's nodule | A nodule at the centre of the free border of each semilunar valve at the beginning of the pulmonary artery and aorta. Synonym: nodulus valvulae semilunaris, Arantius' nodule, Bianchi's nodule, corpus arantii, Morgagni's nodule. (05 Mar 2000) |
| polymorphism, single-stranded conformational | Variation occurring within a species in the conformation of denatured DNA fragments. These single-stranded DNA fragments are allowed to partially renature in a way that prevents the formation of double-stranded DNA. The fragments are run on polyacrylamide gels under various conditions to detect subtle changes in migration due to altered secondary structure. The resulting bands will align themselves if the fragments are the same, but will misalign if any point mutations are present. Sscps have been used in detecting mutations in various genes, such as oncogenes, tumour suppressor genes, and genes responsible for genetic diseases. (12 Dec 1998) |
