| 설명 | 가슴의 앞 위쪽에 위치한 림프성 장기로서, 사춘기에 최고의 무게에 달했다가 이후에 퇴축한다. 이것은 세포매개 면역(cell-mediated immunity: 주로 T-림프구에 의해 일어나며, 자기와 다른 세포에 대한 인식과 이식거부반응에 관여함)기능의 발달과 성숙에 필요한 장기이며, 회백적색으로 보통 정중면에서 결합조직에 의해 결합된 두 개의 엽으로 되어 있다. 가슴샘은 상피세포, 림프구, 가슴샘세포로 구성되어 있으며 전구세포가 가슴샘에 이행하여 림프구로 분화되고, 그 대부분은 파괴되나 나머지는 T림프구를 형성한다. 가슴샘은 또한 호르몬 유사물질인 thymine, thymopoietin, thymosin 등을 분비한다. |

| 설명 | 약을 투여하는 방법에는 여러 가지가 있다. 크게 나누어 보면, 입을 거쳐 위창자계를 통해 넣는 방법과 위창자계를 통하지 않고 바로 혈액으로 넣는 방법이 있다. 위창자계를 통하지 않는 방법으로 가장 흔한 방법은 주사를 이용하는 방법이다. 하지만, 이외에 항문을 통해 넣는 좌약식방법과 혀밑에 넣는 혀밑투여법도 있다. 그러나 대부분의 약제는 경구복용을 하게 된다. 경구복용에 대한 약자는 p.o.(per oral)로 표기한다. 경구복용제의 단점은 복용한 약제가 위창자관계를 거치면서 사람마다 각기 다른 흡수정도와 대사정도를 거치게 되므로 일정한 농도유지가 어렵다는데 있다. 또한 경구복용제의 모양이 캡슐형인지, 혹은 가루형인지에 따라서도 같은 약이지만, 서로 다른 효과를 나타낼 수 있다. |

| thymus derived lymphocyte | <haematology, immunology> A class of lymphocytes, so called because they are derived from the thymus and have been through thymic processing. Involved primarily in controlling cell-mediated immune reactions and in the control of B-cell development. The T-cells coordinate the immune system by secreting lymphokine hormones. There are 3 fundamentally different types of t cells : helper, killer, and suppressor. Each has many subdivisions. T-cells are also called t lymphocytes. They bear T-cell antigen receptors (CD3) and lack Fc or C3b receptors. Major T-cell subsets are CD4 (mainly helper cells) and CD8 (mostly cytotoxic or suppressor T-cells). | thymus gland | A bilaterally symmetric lymphoid organ situated in the anterior superior mediastinum. Each of its two lobes consists of an outer zone, the cortex, relatively rich in lymphocytes (thymocytes), and an inner zone, the medulla, relatively rich in epithelial cells. The thymus is the site of the production of T-lymphocytes. | thymus hyperplasia | Enlargement of the thymus. A condition described in the late 1940's and 1950's as pathological thymic hypertrophy was status thymolymphaticus and was treated with radiotherapy. Unnecessary removal of the thymus was also practiced. It later became apparent that the thymus undergoes normal physiological hypertrophy, reaching a maximum at puberty and involuting thereafter.
