an antitrypanosomal and antifilarial agent, used in the prophylaxis and treatment of African trypanosomiasis and in the treatment of onchocerciasis (for which use it has largely been replaced by ivermectin); it also suppresses growth of and hormone production by adrenocortical cells and is used in the treatment of inoperable, metastasizing adrenocortical cancer. Called also suramin sodium.
