| Strumpell's reflex | Stroking the abdomen or thigh causes flexion of the leg and adduction of the foot. (05 Mar 2000) |

| Marie-Strumpell disease | <rheumatology> A polyarthritis involving the spine, which is characterised by progressive, painful stiffening of the joints and ligaments. It almost exclusively affects young men. Interestingly the disease seems to be associated with HLA B27, those with this histocompatability antigen are 300 times more likely to get the disease, 90% of sufferers have HLA B27 (18 Nov 1997) |

| Westphal-Strumpell pseudosclerosis | <gastroenterology, neurology> An inherited (autosomal recessive) disorder where there is excessive quantities of copper in the tissues, particularly the liver and central nervous system. Wilson's disease causes the body to absorb and retain copper. The copper deposits in the liver, brain, kidneys and eyes. Complications include dementia and liver failure. Symptoms include jaundice, vomiting, tremors, weakness and slow stiff movements. Blood tests show serum ceruloplasmin is low. Medications are given to remove the excess copper from the body. Even with life-long treatment, disabling (and life-threatening) side effects are common. Inheritance: autosomal recessive. (27 Sep 1997) |

It almost exclusively affects young men. | Strumpell's disease | Arthritis and osteitis deformans involving the spinal column; marked by nodular deposits at the edges of the intervertebral disks with ossification of the ligaments and bony ankylosis of the intervertebral articulations, it results in a rounded kyphosis with rigidity. Synonym: Bechterew's disease, poker back, Strumpell's disease. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Strumpell's phenomenon | Dorsal flexion of the great toe, sometimes of the entire foot, in a paralysed limb when the extremity is drawn up against the body, flexing both knee and hip. Synonym: tibial phenomenon. (05 Mar 2000) |

| Fleischer-Strumpell ring | A greenish yellow pigmented ring encircling the cornea just within the corneoscleral margin, seen in hepatolenticular degeneration, due to copper deposited in Descemet's membrane. Synonym: Fleischer-Strumpell ring. (05 Mar 2000) |
| abdominocardiac reflex | Mechanical stimulation (usually distention) of abdominal viscera causing changes (usually a slowing) in the heart rate or the occurrence of extrasystoles. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Abrams' heart reflex | A contraction of the myocardium when the skin of the precordial region is irritated. (05 Mar 2000) |
| accommodation reflex | Increased convexity of the lens, due to contraction of the ciliary muscle and relaxation of the suspensory ligament, to maintain a distinct retinal image. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Achilles reflex | A contraction of the calf muscles when the tendo calcaneus is sharply struck. Synonym: ankle jerk, ankle reflex, tendo Achillis reflex, triceps surae reflex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acousticopalpebral reflex | A form of the wink reflex in which there is a contraction, sometimes very slight, of the orbicularis palpebrarum muscle when a sudden noise is made close to the ear; it is absent in labyrinthine disease with total deafness. Synonym: acousticopalpebral reflex, auropalpebral reflex, cochleo-orbicular reflex, startle reflex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acquired reflex | A reflex that is gradually developed by training and association through the frequent repetition of a definite stimulus. See: conditioning. Synonym: acquired reflex, behaviour reflex, trained reflex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acromial reflex | Contraction of the biceps muscle caused by a tap on the acromion or the coracoid process. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acute reflex bone atrophy | Atrophy of bones, commonly of the carpal or tarsal bones, following a slight injury such as a sprain. See: causalgia, reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Synonym: acute reflex bone atrophy, posttraumatic osteoporosis, Sudeck's syndrome. Origin: L. English sweat (05 Mar 2000) |
