a genus of flies of the family Muscidae. S. bouffar´di transmits trypanosomes to goats in South America. S. cal´citrans is the stable fly, a common pest that bites humans and livestock and transmits many diseases, such as anthrax, infectious anemia, surra, and tetanus.
