a form of epidemic encephalitis caused by a flavivirus, first observed in Illinois in 1932; it is similar to western equine encephalomyelitis clinically, occurring in late summer and early fall and transmitted usually by mosquitoes of the genus Culex. It ranges from an abortive type of infection to severe disease and affects the elderly most often. Called also e. C.
