leukemia <haematology> An acute or chronic disease of unknown cause in man and other warm blooded animals that involves the blood forming organs, is characterised by an abnormal increase in the number of leucocytes in the tissues of the body with or without a corresponding increase of those in the circulating blood and is classified according of the type leucocyte most prominently involved.
(18 Nov 1997)
Rieder cell leukaemia A special form of acute granulocytic leukaemia in which the affected tissues and the circulating blood contain relatively large numbers of atypical myeloblasts (i.e., Rieder cells) that have the usual, faintly granular, immature type of cytoplasm, and a bizarre, comparatively mature nucleus with several wide and deep indentations (suggestive of lobulation).
(05 Mar 2000)
Rieder cells Abnormal myeloblasts (12 to 20 um in diameter) in which the nucleus may be widely and deeply indented (i.e., suggestive of lobulation), or may actually be a bi-or multi-lobate structure; such cell's are frequently observed in acute leukaemia, and probably represent a more rapid maturation of the nucleus than that of the cytoplasm.

Rieder, Hermann <person> German pathologist, 1858-1932.
See: Rieder cells, Rieder cell leukaemia, Rieder's lymphocyte.
(05 Mar 2000)
Rieder's lymphocyte An abnormal form of lymphocyte that has a greatly indented (or lobed), slightly twisted nucleus; such cells are usually observed in certain examples of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.
(05 Mar 2000)
T-cell-rich, B-cell lymphoma <tumour> A B-cell lymphoma in which more than 90% of the cells are of T-cell origin, masking the large cells that form the neoplastic B-cell component.
See: adult T-cell lymphoma.

absorption cell A small glass chamber with parallel sides, in which absorption spectra of solutions can be obtained.
(05 Mar 2000)
acid cell One of the cell's of the gastric glands; it lies upon the basement membrane, covered by the chief cell's, and secretes hydrochloric acid that reaches the lumen of the gland through fine intracellular and intercellular canals (canaliculi).
Synonym: acid cell, oxyntic cell.
(05 Mar 2000)
acidophil cell A cell whose cytoplasm or its granules stain with acid dyes.
(05 Mar 2000)
acinar cell Any secreting cell lining an acinus, especially applied to the cell's of the pancreas that furnish pancreatic juice and enzymes to distinguish them from the cell's of ducts and the islets of Langerhans.
Synonym: acinous cell.
(05 Mar 2000)
acinar cell tumour A solid and cystic tumour of the pancreas, occurring in young women; tumour cells contain zymogen granules.
(05 Mar 2000)
acinic cell adenocarcinoma <tumour> An adenocarcinoma arising from secreting cells of a racemose gland, particularly the salivary glands.
Synonym: acinar carcinoma, acinic cell carcinoma, acinose carcinoma, acinous carcinoma.
(05 Mar 2000)
acinic cell carcinoma <tumour> An adenocarcinoma arising from secreting cells of a racemose gland, particularly the salivary glands.
Synonym: acinar carcinoma, acinic cell carcinoma, acinose carcinoma, acinous carcinoma.
(05 Mar 2000)
acinous cell Any secreting cell lining an acinus, especially applied to the cell's of the pancreas that furnish pancreatic juice and enzymes to distinguish them from the cell's of ducts and the islets of Langerhans.
Synonym: acinous cell.
