| protein-energy malnutrition | The lack of sufficient energy or protein to meet the body's metabolic demands, as a result of either an inadequate dietary intake of protein, intake of poor quality dietary protein, increased demands due to disease, or increased nutrient losses. (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| protein-calorie malnutrition | Severe deficiency of protein + inadequate caloric intake = kwashiorkor. (12 Dec 1998) |
| protein malnutrition | Children are particularly prone to develop protein malnutrition. To grow, children have to consume enough nitrogen-containing food (protein) to maintain a positive nitrogen balance whereas adults need only be in nitrogen equilibrium. (12 Dec 1998) |
| retarded dentition | Dentition in which growth phenomena such as calcification, elongation, and eruption occur later than in the average range of normal variation as a result of some systemic metabolic dysfunction (e.g., hypothyroidism). (05 Mar 2000) |
| education of mentally retarded | The teaching or training of those individuals with subnormal intellectual functioning. (12 Dec 1998) |
| contact following | Behaviour shown by individual slime mould cells when they join a stream moving towards the aggregating centre. Contact sites A at front and rear of cell may be involved in Dictyostelium. (18 Nov 1997) |
| following | 1. Next after; succeeding; ensuing; as, the assembly was held on the following day. 2. <astronomy> (In the field of a telescope) In the direction from which stars are apparently moving (in consequence of the erth's rotation); as, a small star, north following or south following. In the direction toward which stars appear to move is called preceding. The four principal directions in the field of a telescope are north, south, following, preceding. | following bougie | A flexible tapered bougie with a screw tip which is attached to the trailing end of a filiform bougie, to allow progressive dilation without danger of creating false passages. (05 Mar 2000) |
| malignant malnutrition | A nutritional deficiency illness in children who are not getting enough protein, this results in anaemia, poor growth, weakness, and oedema (which isparticularly characterised by a pronounced pot belly). Infamine-stricken regions, children typically develop kwashiorkor rightafter they are weaned. (09 Oct 1997) |
| malnutrition | Faulty or inadequate nutrition. Under nourishment. (27 Sep 1997) |
| Bayley Scales of Infant Development | A psychological test used to measure the developmental progress of infants over the first two and one-half years of life; consists of three scales: mental, motor, and behaviour record. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bone development | Gross development of bones from foetus to adult. It includes osteogenesis, which is restricted to formation and development of bone from the undifferentiated cells of the germ layers of the embryo. It does not include osseointegration. (12 Dec 1998) |
| maxillofacial development | The process of growth and differentiation of the jaws and face. (12 Dec 1998) |
| child development | The continuous sequential physiological and psychological maturing of the child from birth up to but not including adolescence. It includes healthy responses to situations, but does not include growth in stature or size (= growth). (12 Dec 1998) |
| child development disorders, pervasive | Severe distortions in the development of many basic psychological functions that are not normal for any stage in development. These distortions are manifested in sustained social impairment, speech abnormalities, and peculiar motor movements. (12 Dec 1998) |
