a family of winged hemipterous insects of the suborder Heteroptera, including various biting species called cone-nose bugs, kissing bugs, and assassin bugs. Many inflict painful bites on humans and other mammals; some species transmit Chagas' disease. Genera include Eratyrus, Eutriatoma, Melanolestes, Panstrongylus, Reduvius (type genus), Rhodnius, and Triatoma.
