||
||

| hantavirus pulmonary syndrome | <syndrome> Acute respiratory illness in humans caused by the muerto canyon virus whose primary rodent reservoir is the deer mouse peromyscus maniculatus. First identified in the southwestern united states, this syndrome is characterised most commonly by fever, myalgias, headache, cough, and rapid respiratory failure. (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| hantavirus | <virology> A virus in the family Bunyaviridae that causes a type of haemorrhagic fever. It is thought that humans catch the disease mainly from infected rodents, either through direct contact with the animals or by inhaling or ingesting dust that contains their driedurine. (18 Nov 1997) |
| hantavirus infections | Infections with viruses of the genus hantavirus. This is associated with at least four clinical syndromes: haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome caused by viruses of the hantaan group; a milder form of hfrs caused by seoul and related viruses; nephropathia epidemica caused by puumala and related viruses; and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome caused by muerto canyon virus. (12 Dec 1998) |
| pulmonary dysmaturity syndrome | <syndrome> A respiratory disorder occurring in small, premature infants who are incapable of normal pulmonary ventilation and who often die of hypoxia after an illness of 6 to 8 weeks; the lungs contain widespread focal emphysematous blebs and the parenchyma has thickened alveolar walls; diagnosed principally on the basis of the clinical history, chest radiographic findings, and the findings at autopsy, which must include the absence of pathological changes characteristic of other pulmonary disorders commonly encountered in this age group. Synonym: Wilson-Mikity syndrome. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pulmonary venolobar syndrome | <radiology> Always involves aplasia of one or more lobes of right lung, variably involves: partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (scimitar-shaped vein), usually drains to IVC; but portal vein, hepatic vein, RA possible, absent or small pulmonary artery perfusing abnormal lung segment, arterial supply from thoracic/abdominal aorta or coeliac axis, anomalies of hemidiaphragm on affected side, anomalies of bony thorax or thoracic soft tissues Synonym: scimitar syndrome (12 Dec 1998) |
| acute pulmonary alveolitis | Acute inflammation involving exudate into the pulmonary alveoli and impaired gas exchange; may result in necrosis with haemorrhage into the lungs; occurs in Goodpasture's syndrome, in association with a glomerulonephritis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acute pulmonary eosinophilia | <chest medicine> A self-limiting inflammation in the lungs where there is associated infiltration of eosinophils into lung tissue. Chest X-ray reveals pulmonary infiltrates and full blood count shows increased numbers of eosinophils. The cause is unknown and the disease often resolves without treatment. Some forms may be treated with oral corticosteroids. Complications include restrictive cardiomyopathy due to fibrosis of the lining of the heart. (27 Sep 1997) |
| adenomatosis, pulmonary | A neoplastic disease in which the alveoli and distal bronchi are filled with mucus and mucus-secreting columnar epithelial cells. It is characterised by abundant, extremely tenacious sputum, chills, fever, cough, dyspnea, and pleuritic pain. (12 Dec 1998) |
| apical branch of inferior lobar branch of right pulmonary artery | <anatomy, artery> Branch (of the inferior lobar branch) of the right pulmonary artery serving the apical segment of the inferior lobe of the right lung. Synonym: ramus apicalis lobi inferioris arteriae pulmonalis dextrae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| apicoposterior branch of left superior pulmonary vein | <anatomy, vein> Drains apicoposterior bronchopulmonary segment of superior lobe of left lung. Synonym: ramus apicoposterior venae pulmonalis sinistrae superioris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| basal part of pulmonary artery | <anatomy, artery> See: right pulmonary artery, left pulmonary artery. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bifurcation of pulmonary trunk | The division of the pulmonary trunk into right and left pulmonary arteries. Synonym: bifurcatio trunci pulmonalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| valve of pulmonary trunk | <anatomy, cardiology> The heart valve that divides the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery. The pulmonic valve opens when the right ventricle contracts allowing blood to flow into the pulmonary artery. The pulmonic valve on closure prohibits the backwash of unoxygenated blood into the right ventricle. The pulmonic valve has 3 valve cusps. (27 Sep 1997) |
| vein, pulmonary | One of four vessels that carry aerated blood from the lungs to the right atrium of the heart. (the four are the right and left superior and inferior pulmonary veins). The pulmonary veins are the only veins that carry bright red oxygenated blood. (12 Dec 1998) |
| medial basal branch of pulmonary artery | <anatomy, artery> A branch of the basal part of inferior lobar branches of the left and right pulmonary arteries. Synonym: ramus basalis medialis. (05 Mar 2000) |
