proline dehydrogenase [EC 1.5.99.8] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the dehydrogenation of proline to form Δ1-pyrroline 5-carboxylate, using ubiquinone as an electron acceptor. The enzyme is a flavoprotein (FAD) of the mitochondrial membrane and the reaction is the initial step in the degradation of proline to glutamate. Deficiency of the enzyme, an autosomal recessive trait, is the cause of hyperprolinemia Type I. Called also proline oxidase.
