the papovaviruses: a family of DNA viruses having a nonenveloped icosahedral virion 40 nm (polyomaviruses) or 55 nm (papillomaviruses) in diameter with 72 capsomers in skew arrangement. The genome consists of a single circular molecule of double-stranded DNA (MW 3–5 × 106, size 5 kbp for polyomaviruses and 8 kbp for papillomaviruses). Viruses contain five to seven structural proteins and are resistant to ether, acids, and heat. Replication and assembly occur in the nucleus; virions are released by cell destruction. Host range is generally narrow; transmission is by contact or by airborne particles, and many species are oncogenic. There are two genera, Papovavirus and Polyomavirus.
