phthalate dioxygenase <enzyme> Iron-sulfur protein from pseudomonas (burkholderia) cepacia; dihydroxylates phthalate to its 4,5-dihydrodiol; contains a flavo-iron-sulfur protein with NADH-dependent oxidoreductase activity and a non-haem iron protein with oxygenase activity
Registry number: EC 1.14.99.-
Synonym: phthalate oxygenase, phthalate 4,5-dioxygenase
(26 Jun 1999)
phthalate ester hydrolase <enzyme> Converts diester into monoester and alcohol
Registry number: EC 3.1.1.-
Synonym: di-n-butyl phthalate hydrolase, di-n-alkyl phthalate hydrolase
(26 Jun 1999)
phthalate oxygenase reductase <enzyme> Flavoenzyme which transfers electrons from NADH to the iron-sulfur centre of phthalate oxygenase
Registry number: EC 1.-
Synonym: phthalate dioxygenase reductase

phthalein <chemistry> One of a series of artificial organic dyes made as condensation products of the phenols with phthalic acid, and well represented by phenol phthalein. Their alkaline solutions are fluorescent. Phenol phthalein, a white or yellowish white crystalline substance made from phthalic acid and phenol. Its solution in alkalies is brilliant red, but is decolourized by acids, and as this reaction is exceedingly delicate it is used as an indicator.
See: Phthalic.

phthalein dyes Coloured condensation products of phenols with phthalic anhydride; some are used in dye dilution methods to determine kidney or liver function; others are used as pH indicators in chemistry; phenolphthalein is an effective mild cathartic.
(12 Dec 1998)
phthalein test An obsolete test for renal function; after the patient has drunk a glass or two of water, 1 ml of a 0.6% solution of dye is injected hypodermically; the time between this injection and the appearance of a pink tinge in the urine as it falls into an alkaline solution is noted; the amount excreted in each of the next 2 hours is then estimated colourimetrically.
Synonym: Geraghty's test, phthalein test, red test, Rowntree and Geraghty test.

phthalic <chemistry> Pertaining to, or designating, a dibasic acid obtained by the oxidation of naphthalene and allied substances.
<chemistry> Phthalic acid, a white crystalline substance, C6H4.(CO2H)2, analogous to benzoic acid, and employed in the brilliant dyestuffs called the phthaleins.
Origin: Naphthalene + -ic.

phthalide <chemistry> A lactone obtained by reduction of phthalyl chloride, as a white crystalline substance; hence, by extension, any one of the series of which phthalide proper is the type.
Alternative forms: phthalid.
Origin: Phthalyl + anhydride.

phthalidyltheophylline hydrolase <enzyme> Breaks c-n bond between theophylline and phthalidyl residues, then hydrolyzes the lactone bond of the phthalidyl moiety to form theophylline and 2-carboxybenzaldehyde
Registry number: EC 3.5.99.-
Synonym: phthalidyl theophylline hydrolase, pt hydrolase
(26 Jun 1999)
phthalimide <chemistry> An imido derivative of phthalic acid, obtained as a white crystalline substance, C6H4.(CO)2NH, which has itself (like succinimide) acid properties, and forms a series of salts. Cf. Imido acid, under Imido.
Origin: Phthalic + imide.
