| 설명 | 심장은 크게 왼 심장과 오른 심장으로 나눌 수가 있다. 왼 심장은 전신에 피를 순환시키는 역할을 하고 오른 심장은 허파로 피를 보내는 역할을 한다. 좌측 심장에서 나와서 전신을 돌고 온 피는 오른심장으로 들어와서 허파로 보내져서 이산화탄소를 내보내고 산소를 받아들여서 왼 심장으로 다시 들어가 온몸을 순환하게 된다. 허파혈관의 이상이나 허파의 이상으로 인해서 허파의 혈관의 내경이 좁아질 경우에 폐혈관의 압력이 높아지고 허파로 혈액을 보내는 오른 심장의 병적 변화를 보이게 된다. 이 병적인 변화를 폐심장이라고 한다. 이 폐심장의 가장 초기의 오른 심장의 병적 변화는 오른심실의 근육의 비후가 있다. 이것은 폐혈관의 압력이 높아서 허파로 혈액을 순환시키는 데에 많은 힘이 드므로 이 힘을 내기 위해서 근육이 발달하는 것이다. 만약 폐혈관의 고혈압이 지속되어서 근육의 비후로도 허파순환을 지속시키지 못하는 상태가 되면 오른 심장은 그 기능을 못하게되어서 오른 심실과 심방은 피를 폐로 보내지 못하고 피가 심장에 정체가 된다. 이런 상태를 심장기능상실이라고 한다. |

| P-pulmonale | Tall, narrow, peaked P waves in electrocardiographic leads II, III, and aVF, and often a prominent initial positive P wave component in V1, presumed to be characteristic of cor pulmonale. (Although this term is extensively used in the electrocardiographic literature, it is actually a misnomer and would be more appropriately called P-dextrocardiale, since it results from overload of the right atrium regardless of the cause, as in tricuspid stenosis, and may occur independently of cor pulmonale.)
