the effects of hyperoxia due to the breathing of high partial pressures of oxygen for prolonged periods; they include serious, sometimes irreversible, damage to the pulmonary capillary endothelium, followed by cerebral edema and convulsions that can be fatal. Called also oxygen poisoning.
