a polarizing prism made of Iceland Spar (calcite) cut at a specific angle. Nicol prisms are extremely precise, but very expensive, and may be found on older microscopes. Most petrographic microscopes are now equipped with the less expensive (but highly efficient) polarizing film, but the term upper and lower nicols are still used to refer to the polarizing elements.
