any of the types of cutaneous leishmaniasis occurring in South America, Central America, or Mexico, zoonoses caused by species or subspecies of the Leishmania mexicana or L. viannia groups. Their lesions develop and heal similarly to those of the Old World forms but tend to be less nodular and more ulcerative and destructive. Many varieties exist, differing as to animal reservoir, vector, geographical distribution, and clinical and other characteristics; some common forms are mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, chicle or chiclero ulcer, uta, and pian bois.
