acute pancreatitis <radiology> Findings: elevated hemidiaphragm, atelectasis / consolidation, pulmonary oedema (direct toxic effect? cardiosuppression?), pleural effusion (more common on left), sentinel loops, colon cut-off sign, antral pad, duodenum: widened loop, thickened folds, inverted 3 (Frostberg sign)
(12 Dec 1998)
calcific pancreatitis calcareous pancreatitis
pancreatitis <gastroenterology, surgery> Acute or chronic inflammation of the pancreas, which may be asymptomatic or symptomatic and which is due to autodigestion of a pancreatic tissue by its own enzymes.
It is caused most often by alcoholism or biliary tract disease, less commonly it may be associated with hyperlipaemia, hyperparathyroidism, abdominal trauma (accidental or operative injury), vasculitis or uraemia.
(18 Nov 1997)
pancreatitis, acute necrotizing Acute inflammation of the pancreas with areas of devitalised pancreatic and/or peripancreatic tissue. These necrotic areas may involve large areas of the pancreas or may be small. When a ct scan is performed with contrast media using a bolus technique, necrotic areas do not perfuse with media and are not enhanced. The lack of enhancement distinguishes necrotic tissue from the adjacent well-perfused viable pancreatic parenchyma.
(12 Dec 1998)
pancreatitis, alcoholic An acute or chronic degenerative and inflammatory lesion of the pancreas in the alcoholic which is potentially progressive or possibly reversible.
(12 Dec 1998)
chronic pancreatitis Inflammatory disease of the pancreas characterised by fibrosis and irreversible loss of exocrine function.
Chronic fibrosing pancreatitis, inflammation of the pancreas consisting of fibrosis, acinar atrophy, and calcification. Clinically, it follows a protracted course with relapses and remissions, and is usually due to alcohol abuse or malnutrition.
Chronic relapsing pancreatitis, repeated exacerbations of pancreatitis in patient with chronic inflammation of that organ. Relapses are usually due to persistence of aetiologic factor or repeated exposure to it, such as occurs with partial ductal obstruction or chronic alcoholism.
(05 Mar 2000)
chronic pancreatitis: surgical treatment <radiology> ERCP findings Surgical procedure, dilated proximal duct sphincterotomy, dilated distal duct distal pancreatectomy, with or without retrograde jejunal drainage, diffuse ductal dilatation Peustow procedure, (chain-of-lakes), sclerosed duct Child procedure (subtotal panc-x)
(12 Dec 1998)
hereditary pancreatitis <radiology> Rare, autosomal dominant, variable penetrance, onset often in childhood, on X-ray: large, round, peripherally dense calculi
(12 Dec 1998)
vaccination, mumps See Vaccination, MMR. Vaccination, pneumococcal pneumonia: this vaccine, which prevents one of the most common and severe forms of pneumonia, is usually given only once in a lifetime, usually after the age of 55, to someone with ongoing lung problems (such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd) or asthma) or other chronic diseases (including those involving the heart and kidneys). This vaccination would rarely be given to children.
(12 Dec 1998)
measles, mumps and rubella vaccine A combination of live attenuated measles, mumps, and rubella viruses in an aqueous suspension; used for immunization against the respective diseases.
(05 Mar 2000)
metastatic mumps Mumps complicated by involvement of organs other than parotid glands, such as the testis, breast, or pancreas.
(05 Mar 2000)
mumps An infectious acute viral disease affecting the parotid glands. The gonads, meninges and pancreas can also be affected. The causative agent is a paramyxovirus. Humans are the only natural host for this disease.
Common symptoms include weakness, fever, sore throat, malaise and puffiness to the cheeks (due to parotid gland swelling). Patients are contagious 1 day prior to the onset of swelling until the swelling is gone. Recovery is generally in 2 weeks.
(27 Sep 1997)
mumps immunization The standard MMR vaccine is given to prevent measles, mumps and rubella (german measles). The mmr vaccine is now given in two dosages. The first should be given at12-15 months of age. The second vaccination should be given at 4-6 years (or, alternatively, 11-12 years) of age. most colleges require proof of a second measles or mmr vaccination prior to entrance. Most children should receive mmr vaccinations. Exceptions may include children born with an inability to fight off infection, some children with cancer, on treatment with radiation or drugs for cancer, on long term steroids (cortisone). People with severe allergic reactions to eggs or the drug neomycin should probably avoid the mmr vaccine. Pregnant women should wait until after delivery before being immunised with mmr. People with HIV or aids should normally receive mmr vaccine. Measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines may be administered as individual shots, if necessary, or as a measles-rubella combination.
(12 Dec 1998)
mumps in pregnancy It has been stated, we believe erroneously, that mumps is dangerous when contracted during pregnancy. For example, vetter (infect med 14:730-733, 1997), citing a single 1980 article, writes: mumps infection during the first trimester of pregnancy can increase the rate of spontaneous abortion. Congenital anomalies associated with mumps infection during pregnancy include endocardial fibroelastosis; imperforate anus; spina bifida; and auditory, optic, and urogenital deformities. However, shepard in his authorative catalog of teratogenic agents (j hopkins u press, 8th edition, 1995) does not consider that mumps merits inclusion as a proven or even possible teratogenic agent, that is as an agent capable of causing a spontaneous abortion (a miscarriage) or causing congenital malformations (the baby is born with birth defects). Furthermore, mumps does not even warrant mention in smith's recognizable patterns of human malformation (by kl jones, wb saunders co., 5th edition, 1997), a key standard text on dysmorphology (the study of malformations). Based also on our review of the facts available at this time (oct, 1997), we conclude that there is insufficient evidence to label mumps as a particular hazard in pregnancy.
(12 Dec 1998)
mumps meningoencephalitis A usually benign nervous system infection arising during the active phase of clinical mumps parotiditis.
