| Methanococcus |
a genus of methane-producing bacteria of the family Methanobacteriaceae, made up of spherical cells occurring singly, in pairs, or in masses. They are strict anaerobes that derive energy from the formation of methane from hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and formate. They are found in soils, mud, sewage sludge, and the intestinal tract of animals. The type species is M. ma´zei.
