| Methanobacterium |
a genus of methane-producing bacteria of the family Methanobacteriaceae, made up of nonspore-forming, coccoid, rod-shaped organisms that are strictly anaerobic and derive energy by the reduction of carbon dioxide to methane. They are widely distributed, occurring in mud, sewage, and the digestive tracts of animals. The type species is M. soehnge´nii.
