physical sciences The natural sciences dealing with inanimate matter or with energy, as physics, chemistry, astronomy.
(12 Dec 1998)
physical education and training Instructional programs in the care and development of the body, often in schools. The concept does not include prescribed exercises, which is exercise therapy.
(12 Dec 1998)
behavioural sciences Disciplines concerned with the study of human and animal behaviour.
(12 Dec 1998)
biological sciences All of the divisions of the natural sciences dealing with the various aspects of the phenomena of life and vital processes. The concept includes anatomy and physiology, biochemistry and biophysics, and the biology of animals, plants, and microorganisms. It should be differentiated from biology, one of its subdivisions, concerned specifically with the origin and life processes of living organisms.
(12 Dec 1998)
social sciences Disciplines concerned with the interrelationships of individuals in a social environment including social organizations and institutions. Includes sociology and anthropology.
(12 Dec 1998)
national academy of sciences A united states organization of distinguished scientists and engineers established for the purpose of investigating and reporting upon any subject of art or science as requested by any department of government. The national research council organised by nas serves as the principal operating agency to stimulate and support research.
(12 Dec 1998)
mathematical Of or pertaining to mathematics; according to mathematics; hence, theoretically precise; accurate; as, mathematical geography; mathematical instruments; mathematical exactness. Mathematically.
See: Mathematic.

(01 Mar 1998)
mathematical chaos A dynamic system so sensitive to its precise current state (which in practice will never be known exactly) that its behaviour, though deterministic, is indistinguishable from random.
(05 Mar 2000)
mathematical computing Computer-assisted interpretation and analysis of various mathematical functions related to a particular problem.
(12 Dec 1998)
mathematical determinant A formal algebraic operation on the terms of a square matrix of quantities, fundamental in solving multiple simultaneous equations and widely used in regression analysis, notably in epidemiology and quantitative genetics. If determinant is zero, the equations have no unambiguous solution.
(05 Mar 2000)
mathematical genetics The study of genetic traits by formal analysis, e.g., quantitative genetics, population dynamics, genetic epidemiology, modeling.
(05 Mar 2000)
mathematical model <epidemiology> A formal framework to convey ideas about the components of a host-parasite interaction. Construction requires three major types of information: (a) a clear understanding of the interaction within the individual host between the infectious agent and the host, (b) the mode and rate of transmission between individuals, and (c) host population characteristics such as demography and behaviour.
Mathematical models can aid exploration of the behaviour of the system under various conditions from which to determine the dominant factors generating observed patterns and phenomena. They also aid data collection and interpretation and parameter estimation, and provide tools for identifying possible approaches to control and for assessing the potential impact of different intervention measures.
(05 Dec 1998)
anthropology, physical The comparative science dealing with the physical characteristics of man as related to his origin, evolution, and development in his total environment.
(12 Dec 1998)
map, physical A map of the locations of identifiable landmarks on chromosomes. Physical distance is measured in base pairs. The physical map differs from the genetic map which is based purely on genetic linkage data. In the human genome, the lowest-resolution physical map is the banding patterns of the 24 different chromosomes. The highest-resolution physical map is the complete nucleotide sequence of all chromosomes, a future goal.
(12 Dec 1998)
restraint, physical Use of a device for the purpose of preventing the individual from moving all or part of the body. The concept excludes splints and casts.
