| Masson's trichrome stain | <technique> Original composition for multicolored tissue preparations included Ponceau de xylidine, acid fuchsin, iron alum haematoxylin, and either aniline blue or fast green FCF; chromatin stains black, cytoplasm is in shades of red, granules of eosinophils and mast cells are deep red, erythrocytes are black, elastic fibres are red, and collagen fibres and mucus are dark blue (aniline blue) or green (fast green FCF); modifications substitute other dyes, such as Biebrich scarlet red and wool green stain. (05 Mar 2000) |

| Mallory's trichrome stain | <technique> A method especially suitable for studying connective tissue; sections are stained in acid fuchsin, aniline blue-orange G solution, and phosphotungstic acid; fibrils of collagen are blue, fibroglia, neuroglia, and muscle fibres are red, and fibrils of elastin are pink or yellow. Synonym: Mallory's aniline blue stain, Mallory's triple stain. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| Gomori's one-step trichrome stain | <technique> A connective tissue stain that uses haematoxylin and a dye mixture containing chromotrope 2R and light green or aniline blue; muscle fibres appear red, collagen is green (or blue if aniline blue is used), and nuclei are blue to black. (05 Mar 2000) |
| picro-Mallory trichrome stain | <technique> A modification of Mallory's trichrome stain that involves the addition of picric acid. (05 Mar 2000) |
| MSB trichrome stain | <technique> A stain for fibrin using martius yellow, brilliant crystal scarlet 6R, and soluble blue; fibrin is selectively stained red and connective tissue appears blue. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trichrome stain | <technique> Staining combinations which usually contain three dyes of contrasting colours selected to stain connective tissue, muscle, cytoplasm, and nuclei in bright colours; generally, tissue sections are first dyed in iron haematoxylin before being treated with the other dyes. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Masson-Fontana ammoniacal silver stain | <technique> A stain used to demonstrate melanin and argentaffin granules. Synonym: Fontana-Masson silver stain. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Masson's argentaffin stain | <technique> A stain used to stain enterochromaffin granules brown-black. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Fontana-Masson silver stain | <technique> A stain used to demonstrate melanin and argentaffin granules. Synonym: Fontana-Masson silver stain. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Masson | C.L. Pierre, Canadian pathologist, 1880-1959. See: Masson's pseudoangiosarcoma, Masson-Fontana ammoniacal silver stain. See entries under stain. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Masson's pseudoangiosarcoma | A benign florid papillary endothelial proliferation within the veins of the skin or subcutis, less often in visceral blood vessels. Synonym: Masson's pseudoangiosarcoma. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dyke-davidoff-masson syndrome | <radiology> Unilateral skull and sinus hypertrophy, mainly frontal sinus and mastoid air cells, atrophy of ipsilateral cerebral hemisphere (in childhood), cerebral infarction (most often), infection, trauma, congenital hypoplasia (12 Dec 1998) |
| Abbott's stain | <technique> Spores are stained blue with alkaline methylene blue; bodies of the bacilli become pink with eosin counterstain. (05 Mar 2000) |
| aceto-orcein stain | <technique> A stain used for chromosomes in air-dried or squashed cytologic material. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acid-fast stain | <technique> A staining technique used to determine the cell wall property of a microorganism. After stained with dye such as hot carbolfuschin, an acid-fast organism, (for example Mycobacterium species) will retain the colour in its cell wall after being washed with acid-alcohol. (13 Nov 1997) |
| acid stain | <technique> A dye in which the anion is the coloured component of the dye molecule, e.g., sodium eosinate (eosin). (05 Mar 2000) |
