maser The acronym for Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, a device used to amplify or generate microwaves, using stimulated emission. A precursor of the laser, the maser was developed in the early 1950s by Charles H. Townes and Arthur L. Schawlow at Bell Laboratories. The maser used microwaves instead of light.
