Lembert s. an inverting suture commonly used in gastrointestinal surgery: the needle is inserted about 2.5 mm lateral to the incision, through the serous and muscular tunics but not the submucosa, and brought out near the edge of the incision, then inserted near the edge on the opposite side and brought out at the more distant point, without having entered the lumen of the gut. It may be either interrupted or continuous. See Plate 47.
