His work centreed on colloid and toxic goitre, for which he became a Nobel Laureate in 1909. He was a pioneer abdominal surgeon, being one of the first to successfully resect and unite the intestines. Halsted adored Kocher and copied many of his mannerisms (surgical gloves, silk gloves).
