| 설명 | 노년기에 접어든 사람에게 나타나는 의학적인 여러 문제를 다루는 학문. 의학의 한 분야이다. 수명의 연장만을 꾀하는 것이 아니고 활동기를 조금이라도 늘려서 적극적인 생활을 할 수 있도록 하려는 것이 목적이다. 노인의학은 노인병학이라고도 한다. 한 마디로 정의하기 어렵지만, 영국 노인의학회에서는 ‘노년에서 질병의 일상적-예방적-치료적-사회적인 면과 관련된 일반의학의 한 분야’로 정의하고 있다. 노년학과의 차이는 노년학은 질병의 효과와 구별되는 정상노화자병에 대한 연구라는 것이다. 현재 세계 노인인구가 급격히 증가함에 따라 사회로부터 주목을 받으면서 의학의 한 분야로 정착되고 있다. 미국의 경우 1988년 이후 노인의학 전문의사가 배출되고 있으며, 한국에서도 이에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있다. |
