abbreviation for Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, or what used to be called juvenile diabetes (although it can also occur in adulthood). In Type I Diabetes (IDDM), the pancreas' ability to produce insulin has been nearly or totally destroyed and the patient must receive outside (exogenous) sources of injected insulin in order to survive. In Type II Diabetes (NIDDM), the pancreas produces lots of insulin, but the body become resistant to its effects over time.
