a genus of flies of the family Muscidae that do not bite but often cause irritation by landing in large numbers on animals. H. ir´ritans is the head fly, a common species of northern Europe that is attracted to any surface of an animal's body where there are secretions such as sweat, blood, saliva, or tears. H. meteo´rica is a species that gathers around the eyes and nostrils of humans and other animals.
