a genus of flagellate protozoa (suborder Diplomonadina, order Diplomonadida), characterized by the presence of two anterior nuclei and six anterior and two posterior flagella. It comprises free-living species as well as intestinal parasites. H. melea´gridis causes enteritis in wild and domestic fowl, including turkeys, chickens, quail, and partridges. H. mu´ris is found in rats, mice, hamsters, and various wild rodents, H. salmo´nis in trout and salmon, and H. colum´bae in pigeons.
