Anemia caused by the destruction of red blood cells by a disease process. Occurs in newborns as a result of blood- group incompatibility between mother and baby. It is also caused by abnormal red cell membranes or abnormal hemoglobin, ie, sickle cell anemia and thallassemia. Complications include all the ill effects of profound anemia as well as possible problems caused by jaundice.
