a tissue culture medium containing hypoxanthine, aminopterin, and thymidine, used in somatic cell fusion experiments. Aminopterin (an antifolate) blocks de novo synthesis of purine and thymine nucleotides, but these compounds can be produced from hypoxanthine and thymidine by normal cells possessing the enzymes hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) and thymidine kinase (TK).
