Bordet and Gengou reaction <immunology> Binding of complement as a result of its interaction with immune complexes (the classical pathway) or particular surfaces (alternative pathway).

Bordet-Gengou bacillus <bacteria> A small, aerobic, gram-negative bacillus, causative organism of whooping cough.
Produces a variety of toxins including a dermonecrotising toxin, an adenyl cyclase, an endotoxin and pertussis toxin, as well as surface components such as fimbrial haemagglutinin.

Bordet-Gengou phenomenon The phenomenon of complement fixation; when alexin (complement)-containing serum is added to a mixture of bacteria and specific antibody, the alexin is removed (fixed) and is not available to lyse subsequently added erythrocytes sensitised with specific antibody.
