| haematogenous theory of endometriosis | That endometrial tissue is carried, like metastases of a malignant tumour, through the blood stream. (05 Mar 2000) |
| implantation theory of the production of endometriosis | That, at the time of menstruation, cells of the uterine mucosa pass through the fallopian tubes and escape into the pelvic cavity where they implant themselves on the peritoneum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| endometriosis | <gynaecology> A condition in which tissue more or less perfectly resembling the uterine mucous membrane (the endometrium) and containing typical endometrial granular and stromal elements occurs aberrantly in various locations in the pelvic cavity. Synonym: adenomyosis externa, endometriosis externa. (18 Nov 1997) |
| endometriosis interna | <gynaecology> A condition where there is abnormal thickening of the endometrial lining of the uterus, extending into the fibrous and muscular layers. This condition occurs most commonly in women above 30 who have had children. Symptoms include prolonged or heavy menstrual bleeding and painful menses with cramping. Treatment generally includes pain medications and a hysterectomy in select (more severe) cases. Birth control pills may aggravate symptoms. (07 Apr 1998) |
| lymphatic dissemination theory of endometriosis | That endometrial tissue is transmitted by the lymphatic channels. (05 Mar 2000) |

| scar cancer of the lungs | A pulmonary cancer intimately related to a localised area of parenchymal fibrosis; the cancer probably induces the fibrosis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| scar carcinoma | <tumour> Carcinoma of the lung, usually adenocarcinoma, arising from a peripheral lung scar or associated with interstitial fibrosis in a honeycomb lung. Synonym: scar cancer. (05 Mar 2000) |
| hypertrophic scar | An elevated scar resembling a keloid but which does not spread into surrounding tissues, is rarely painful, and regresses spontaneously; collagen bundles run parallel to the skin surface. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acute cutaneous leishmaniasis | A form of cutaneous leishmaniasis characterised by rural distribution of human cases near infected rodents, particularly communal ground squirrels; characterised by acute rapidly developing dermal lesions that become severely inflamed, with moist necrotizing sores or ulcers that heal in two to eight months after a two to four month incubation period; among nonimmune immigrants, multiple lesions may develop, which heal more slowly and leave disabling or disfiguring scars. A strong delayed hypersensitivity and involvement of immune complexes play a role in necrosis, which is part of the healing process and of the strong specific immunity that follows. Synonym: acute cutaneous leishmaniasis, rural cutaneous leishmaniasis, wet cutaneous leishmaniasis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| administration, cutaneous | The application of suitable drug dosage forms to the skin for either local or systemic effects. (12 Dec 1998) |
