encephalomyocarditis virus, a virus of the genus Cardiovirus found in Africa, South America, and elsewhere, which causes mild aseptic meningitis in humans and encephalomyocarditis in pigs and certain nonhuman primates; it is represented by four strains which appear to be substantially identical in immunological and other respects. It includes the Columbia SK, Mengo, and MM viruses.
