atypical lymphocytes of three types invariably present in infectious mononucleosis. Type I is a mature cell with a kidney-shaped or lobulated nucleus with vacuolated, basophilic foamy cytoplasm; type II cells contain plasmacytoid nuclei with less vacuolated and basophilic cytoplasm; type III has a finer chromatin pattern and one or two nucleoli.
