| 설명 | 쌍가닥 RNA 바이러스의 일군으로서 바퀴모양의 외관을 가진다. 이 바이러스는 창자의 상피세포에서 복제되고, 특히 급성 영아 위창자염을 일으킨다. 또한 쥐, 송아지 및 돼지의 설사를 일으키기도 한다. 사람의 감염은 겨울에 최고조에 달한다. |

| 설명 | 대변에 포함된 수분의 양이 많아져서 대변이 죽모양으로 된 것. 소화 불량이나 세균 감염으로 인해 창자에서 물과 염분 따위가 충분히 흡수되지 않을 때나 작은창자나 큰창자로부터의 분비액이 늘어나거나 창자의 꿈틀운동이 활발해졌을 때 일어난다. 즉, 창자의 꿈틀운동의 항진, 호흡기능의 저하, 체액의 삼출 등 때문에 정상이면 수시간 걸리는 소화관의 통과시간이 1~2시간이 되어 창자의 내용물이 수분이 많은 상태로 배출된다. 원인에는 세균-바이러스-기생충 등이 만들어낸 독소의 작용, 소화기능의 저하, 창자관점막의 삼투압의 변화, 기계적-물리적인 자극, 장내용물의 이상발효 등이 있으며, 설사변의 성분도 대변 외에 점액-혈액-고름 등이 섞일 때도 있고 배변 횟수도 하루에 1회도 있으나 수십회에 이르는 경우도 있다. |

| Rotavirus | <virology> Genus of the Reoviridae having a double layered capsid and 11 double stranded RNA molecules in the genome. They have a wheel like appearance in the electron microscope and cause acute diarrhoeal disease in their mammalian and avian hosts. Probably the most important cause of severe dehydrating diarrhoea in children under three years of age worldwide. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, low-grade fever and diarrhoea.
