| background level | The average amount of a substance present in the environment. Originally referring to naturally occurring phenomena. Used in toxic substance monitoring. (05 Dec 1998) |
| background radiation | <radiobiology> Level of environmental radation due to background sources. Background sources can be natural, such as cosmic rays and natural radioactive elements (principally radon, but including other elements such as isotopes of potassium (which people get substantial amounts of in foods like bananas)). They can also be man-made, such as from fossil-fuel combustion, everyday leakage from nuclear activities, and leftover from atmospheric nuclear weapons tests. Background radiation is usually distinguished from acute radiation, such as from medical X-rays, nuclear accidents, radioisotope therapy, or other short-term doses. The man-made contribution to background radiation is quite small compared to the natural contribution, medical uses dominate human exposure to acute radiation. (09 Oct 1997) |
| background retinopathy | <ophthalmology, pathology> Early stage of diabetic retinopathy, it usually does not impair vision. Origin: Gr. Pathos = disease (09 Oct 1997) |
| retracted publication | Designation of an article or book retracted in whole or in part by an author or authors or an authorised representative. It identifies a citation previously published and now retracted through a formal issuance from the author, publisher, or other authorised agent, and is distinguished from retraction of publication, which identifies the citation retracting the original published item. (12 Dec 1998) |
| retraction of publication | A statement issued by one or more authors of an article or a book, withdrawing or disavowing acknowledgment of their participation in performing research or writing the results of their study. In indexing, the retraction is sent to the editor of the publication in which the article appeared and is published under the rubric "retraction" or in the form of a letter. This publication type designates the author's statement of retraction: it should be differentiated from retracted publication which labels the retracted publication. (12 Dec 1998) |
| publication bias | The influence of study results on the chances of publication and the tendency of investigators, reviewers, and editors to submit or accept manuscripts for publication based on the direction or strength of the study findings. Publication bias has an impact on the interpretation of clinical trials and meta-analyses. Bias can be minimised by insistence by editors on high-quality research, thorough literature reviews, acknowledgement of conflicts of interest, modification of peer review practices, etc. (12 Dec 1998) |
| duplicate publication | Simultaneous or successive publishing of identical or near- identical material in two or more different sources without acknowledgment. It differs from reprinted publication in that a reprint cites sources. It differs from plagiarism in that duplicate publication is the product of the same authorship while plagiarism publishes a work or parts of a work of another as one's own. The designation given an article or book of identical or nearly identical material published simultaneously or successively with the material previously published elsewhere, without acknowledgment. (12 Dec 1998) |
| aromatic series | All the compounds derived from benzene, or similar cyclic compounds that obey Huckel's rule, distinguished from those compounds that are acyclic or that contain rings that lack the conjugated double bond structure characteristic of benzene. (05 Mar 2000) |
| granulocytic series | <haematology> The cells in the several stages of development in the bone marrow leading to the mature granulocyte of the circulation, e.g., myeloblasts, different stages of the myelocyte, granulocytes. (05 Mar 2000) |
| myeloid series | The granulocytic and the erythrocytic series. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Hofmeister series | <chemistry> The series of cations Magnesium, Calcium, Sr2+, Ba2+, Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+, and of anions citrate3-, tartrate2-, SO42-, acetate-, NO3-, CIO3-, I-, CNS- (among others). Each series is arranged in order of decreasing ability to: 1) precipitate the dispersed substance of lyophilic soltions; 2) "salt out" organic substances (e.g., aniline, ethyl acetate) from aqueous solutions; or 3) inhibit the swelling of gels. These effects, among other related ones, are ascribable to the abstraction and binding of water by these ions (i.e., hydration), which also decreases in the orders given, so that (in the monovalent cation series) Li+, with the smallest crystal radius, has the largest hydrated radius, and vice versa for Cs+. Synonym: lyotropic series. (05 Mar 2000) |
| homologous series | A series of organic compounds, the succeeding members of which differ from each other by the radical CH2 (as in the fatty series). (05 Mar 2000) |
| series | 1. A number of things or events standing or succeeding in order, and connected by a like relation; sequence; order; course; a succession of things; as, a continuous series of calamitous events. "During some years his life a series of triumphs." (Macaulay) 2. <biology> Any comprehensive group of animals or plants including several subordinate related groups. Sometimes a series includes several classes; sometimes only orders or families; in other cases only species. 3. <mathematics> An indefinite number of terms succeeding one another, each of which is derived from one or more of the preceding by a fixed law, called the law of the series; as, an arithmetical series; a geometrical series. Origin: L. Series, fr. Serere, sertum, to join or bind together; cf. Gr. To fasten, Skr. Sarit thread. Cf. Assert, Desert a solitude, Exert, Insert, Seraglio.
