a genus of climbing vines of the family Menispermaceae. C. capen´sis of southern Africa is emetic and cathartic. C. parei´ra L. is the false pareira or velvetleaf, used in tropical parts of the Americas to treat snakebites and as a diuretic, expectorant, emmenagogue, and febrifuge.
