Carnett's s. a test for parietal tenderness: the abdomen is palpated while the patient holds the anterior abdominal muscles tense; the tense muscles prevent the examiner's fingers from coming in contact with the underlying viscera and any tenderness elicited over them will be parietal in location. Tenderness elicited over relaxed muscles may be either parietal or intra-abdominal in origin; that present with relaxed muscles and absent with tense muscles is due to a subparietal lesion and its cause is inside the abdomen; that found with both relaxed and tensed muscles is due to an anterior parietal lesion and its cause is outside the abdominal cavity.
