| Caldani's ligament | <anatomy> The strong ligament that unites the clavicle to the coracoid process; it is subdivided into the conoid ligamentum and the trapezoid ligamentum. The free upper limb is passively suspended from the clavicular "strut" by the coracoclavicular ligament; the ligament also plays an important role in preventing dislocation of the acromioclavicular joint. Synonym: ligamentum coracoclaviculare, Caldani's ligament. (05 Mar 2000) |

| caldesmon | <protein> Protein originally isolated from smooth muscle (h caldesmon, 120-150 kD on gels but 88.7 kD from sequence) also found in nonmuscle cells (l caldesmon, 70-80 kD on gels but 58.8 kD from sequence). Normally dimeric, binds to F actin blocking the myosin binding site. Calcium calmodulin binding to caldesmon causes its release from actin, though phosphorylation of caldesmon may also affect the link with actin. Caldesmon can block the effect of gelsolin on f actin and will dissociate actin gelsolin complexes and actin profilin complexes. (18 Nov 1997) |

| Caldwell-Luc operation |
1. antrostomy in which an opening is made into the maxillary sinus by way of an incision into the supradental fossa opposite the premolar teeth, usually done to remove tooth roots or abnormal tissue from the sinus. 2. in compound zygomaticomaxillary fractures, the packing of the maxillary sinus by approaching the antrum through the canine fossa of the maxilla above the tooth apices, thus allowing reduction of displaced fragments of the zygoma by upward and outward pressure. Called also Luc's o.

| caldesmon |
a protein that exists in two isoforms: a high molecular weight form found in smooth muscles that can bind to actin and tropomyosin, prevent actin-myosin linkage, and inhibit muscle contraction, and a low molecular weight form found in nonmuscle tissue and cells that plays a role in regulating the microfilament network.
