| burkholderia | A genus of gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacteria. Organisms in this genus had originally been classified as members of the pseudomonas genus but overwhelming biochemical and chemical findings indicated the need to separate them from other pseudomonas species, and hence, this new genus was created. (12 Dec 1998) |
| burkholderia cepacia | A species of burkholderia considered to be an opportunistic human pathogen. It has been associated with various types of infections of nosocomial origin. (12 Dec 1998) |
| burkholderia infections | Infections with bacteria of the genus burkholderia. (12 Dec 1998) |
| burkholderia pseudomallei | A species of gram-negative, aerobic bacteria that causes melioidosis. It has been isolated from soil and water in tropical regions, particularly southeast asia. (12 Dec 1998) |
| burkina faso | A republic in western africa, south and east of mali and west of niger. Its capital is ouagadougou. It was formerly called upper volta until 1984. A french protectorate was established over the region 1895-97. It was part of upper senegal-niger colony until 1919 when it became a separate colony. Burkina faso remained under french jurisdiction with varied status until it became totally independent in 1960. Its name is native, meaning land of worthy men, from burkina (worthy) + faso (land, literally father village from fa (father) + so (village)). (12 Dec 1998) |
| burkitt lymphoma | A form of undifferentiated malignant lymphoma usually found in central africa, but also reported in other parts of the world. It is commonly manifested as a large osteolytic lesion in the jaw or as an abdominal mass. B-cell antigens are expressed on the immature cells that make up the tumour in virtually all cases of burkitt lymphoma. The epstein-barr virus (herpes virus 4, human) has been isolated from burkitt lymphoma cases in africa and it is implicated as the causative agent in these cases; however, most non-african cases are ebv-negative. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Burkitt's lymphoma | <oncology, tumour> A type of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma that most often occurs in young people between the ages of 12 and 30. The disease usually causes a rapidly growing tumour in the abdomen. (12 May 1997) |

| Woolf-Lineweaver-Burk plot | <statistics> A graph made to analyse how fast an enzyme can convert its substrate into its product, depending on how much substrate is present (its concentration) and to determine its maximum speed (after which the enzyme does not get any faster no matter how high the concentration of substrate gets), called Vmax. It is a plot of 1/v versus 1/[S], where v=rate of product formation and [S]=the concentration of the substrate. Synonym: Lineweaver-Burk plot, Woolf-Lineweaver-Burk plot. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| Lineweaver-Burk equation | A rearrangement of the Michaelis-Menten equation, 1/v = 1/Vmax + (Km/Vmax)(1/[S]). Compare: double-reciprocal plot. (05 Mar 2000) |

An aggressive (rapidly progressing) type of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that occurs most often in children and young adults. The disease may affect the jaw, central nervous system, bowel, kidneys, ovaries, or other organs. There are three main types of Burkitt s lymphoma (sporadic, endemic, and immunodeficiency related). Sporadic Burkitt s lymphoma occurs throughout the world, and endemic Burkitt s lymphoma occurs in Africa. ...
