| Bordet and Gengou reaction | <immunology> Binding of complement as a result of its interaction with immune complexes (the classical pathway) or particular surfaces (alternative pathway). (18 Nov 1997) |
|---|
| Bordet-Gengou bacillus | <bacteria> A small, aerobic, gram-negative bacillus, causative organism of whooping cough. Produces a variety of toxins including a dermonecrotising toxin, an adenyl cyclase, an endotoxin and pertussis toxin, as well as surface components such as fimbrial haemagglutinin. (18 Nov 1997) |
|---|---|
| Bordet-Gengou phenomenon | The phenomenon of complement fixation; when alexin (complement)-containing serum is added to a mixture of bacteria and specific antibody, the alexin is removed (fixed) and is not available to lyse subsequently added erythrocytes sensitised with specific antibody. See: Gengou phenomenon. (05 Mar 2000) |
