beta-agonist Also called beta-2-agonist, beta-adrenergic agonist. Also written ?agonist, ?-agonist. The most common type of bronchodilator medication. Albuterol is a beta-agonist. The name beta-agonist comes from the way the medicine works, which is to enhance the stimulation of a certain kind of autonomic nerve (the beta-2 type, as it happens), which is responsible for relaxing the airway smooth muscle (thereby opening the airways).
