a plump modified macrophage found in the Aschoff bodies, inflammatory lesions of the heart characteristic of rheumatic fever; they contain round to ovoid nuclei with a central, slender, caterpillarlike ribbon of chromatin. Called also Anichkov's myocyte, cardiac histiocyte, and caterpillar c.
