| sulbactam | <chemical> 3,3-dimethyl-7-oxo-4-thia-1-azabicyclo(3.2.0)heptane-2-carboxylic acid 4,4-dioxide. A beta-lactamase inhibitor with very weak antibacterial action. The compound prevents antibiotic destruction of beta-lactam antibiotics by inhibiting beta-lactamases, thus extending their spectrum activity. Combinations of sulbactam with beta-lactam antibiotics have been used successfully for the therapy of infections caused by organisms resistant to the antibiotic alone. Pharmacological action: enzyme inhibitors, antibiotics, lactam. Chemical name: 4-Thia-1-azabicyclo(3.2.0)heptane-2-carboxylic acid, 3,3-dimethyl-7-oxo-, 4,4-dioxide, (2S-cis)- (12 Dec 1998) |

| ampicillin | <drug> Penicillin derivative with broad spectrum activity, ampicillin resistance is often used as a marker for plasmid transfer in genetic engineering (for example pBR322 is ampicillin resistant). (13 Nov 1997) |
| ampicillin resistance | Nonsusceptibility of a microbe to the action of ampicillin, a penicillin derivative that interferes with cell wall synthesis. (12 Dec 1998) |
