clavulanic acid <chemical> Clavulanic acid (c8h9o5n) and its salts and esters. The acid is a suicide inhibitor of bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes from streptomyces clavuligerus. Administered alone, it has only weak antibacterial activity against most organisms, but given in combination with beta-lactam antibiotics prevents antibiotic inactivation by microbial lactamase.
Pharmacological action: antibiotics, lactam, enzyme inhibitors.
Chemical name: 4-Oxa-1-azabicyclo(3.2.0)heptane-2-carboxylic acid, 3-(2-hydroxyethylidene)-7-oxo-, (2R-(2alpha,3Z,5alpha))

amoxicillin <chemical> (2s-(2 alpha,5 alpha,6 beta(s*)))-6-((amino(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetyl)amino)-3,3-dimethyl-7-oxo-4-thia-1-azabicyclo(3.2.0)heptane-2-carboxylic acid. A broad-spectrum semisynthetic antibiotic similar to ampicillin except that its resistance to gastric acid permits higher serum levels with oral administration.
Pharmacological action: penicillins.
Chemical name: 4-Thia-1-azabicyclo(3.2.0)heptane-2-carboxylic acid, 6-((amino(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetyl)amino)-3,3-dimethyl-7-oxo-, (2S-(2alpha,5alpha,6beta(S*)))-

amoxicillin-potassium clavulanate combination <chemical> A fixed-ratio combination of amoxicillin trihydrate, an aminopenicillin, and potassium clavulanate, a beta-lactamase inhibitor, used to treat broad-spectrum antibacterial infections, especially of resistant strains.
Pharmacological action: antibiotics, combined, antibiotics, lactam, enzyme inhibitors.

clavulanic acids <chemical> Acids, salts, and derivatives of clavulanic acid (c8h9o5n). They consist of those beta-lactam compounds that differ from penicillin in having the sulfur of the thiazolidine ring replaced by an oxygen. They have limited antibacterial action, but block bacterial beta-lactamase irreversibly, so that similar antibiotics are not broken down by the bacterial enzymes and therefore can exert their antibacterial effects.
Pharmacological action: antibiotics, lactam, enzyme inhibitors.

Rambourg's chromic acid-phosphotungstic acid stain <technique> A stain for glycoproteins, used with an electron microscope, with which ultrathin tissue sections reveal complex carbohydrates in the same locations as shown by Rambourg's periodic acid-chromic methenamine-silver stain.

algae and fungi Algae represent a group of spore-propagating plants, unicellular or undifferentiated into root, stem, and leaf. They include seaweed and many unicellular fresh water plants, most of which contain chlorophyll. They account for about 90% of the earth's photosynthetic activity. Fungi are eukaryotic, heterotrophic organisms that live as saprobes or parasites and include mushrooms, yeasts, smuts, molds, etc. They lack chlorophyll.
