Akabane virus A virus of the genus Bunyavirus, family Bunyaviridae, causing abortion in cattle and congenital arthrogryposis and hydranencephaly in bovine foetuses in Israel, Japan, and Australia; it is transmitted by mosquitoes.

Akabane disease A disease of cattle, sheep and goats, caused by the Akabane virus and characterised by foetal or neonatal arthrogryposis and hydranencephaly, abortions, and foetal death; the causative virus is transmitted by mosquitoes in Japan and by the midge Culicoides brevitarsis in Australia.

borna disease virus An unclassified, single-stranded RNA virus, possibly related to the family rhabdoviridae, causing a rare and usually fatal encephalitic disease in horses and other domestic animals and possibly deer. Its name derives from the city in saxony where the condition was first described in 1894, but the disease occurs in europe, n. Africa, and the near east.

bovine virus diarrhoea-mucosal disease Acute disease of cattle caused by the bovine viral diarrhoea virus (diarrhoea virus, bovine viral). Often mouth ulcerations are the only sign but fever, diarrhoea, drop in milk yield, and loss of appetite are also seen. Mortality is high in animals showing clinical signs, especially diarrhoea.

visceral disease virus <virology> Probably the most widespread of the Herpetoviridae group.
Infected cells enlarge and have a characteristic inclusion body (composed of virus particles) in the nucleus. Causes disease only in utero (leading to abortion or stillbirth or to various congenital defects), although can be opportunistic in the immunocompromised host.
Patients who have been exposed to the virus will remain cytomegalovirus IgG positive.
