a genus of fungi of the family Gymnoascaceae. A. capsula´tus, the perfect stage of Histoplasma capsulatum, is the etiologic agent of classic histoplasmosis. A. dermati´tidis, the perfect stage of Blastomyces dermatitidis, is the etiologic agent of North American blastomycosis.
